Image: Gametes, by Seth Friedman

Part 1
Mature gametes are expelled from the conceptable. The resulting zygote then develops into a multicellular sporophyte. The sporophyte reproduces by forming motile spores. These spores, in turn, grow into multicellular gametophytes.

Part 2
The familiar rockweed, Fucus, may also reproduce asexually by fragmentation.

Part 3
As the cytoplasmic mass crawls over the forest floor, it engulfs pieces of leaves and decaying matter. When it encounters unfavorable conditions, stalklike fruiting bodies form. Haploid flagellated gametes form.
